FAQ
Requirements to book a car
You must:
have a Turo account
be at least 21 (25 for the Model X)
hold a current, non-temporary, driver's license
have a text-enabled mobile phone in your name
meet our auto insurance score benchmark
If you have a non-US license and want to book a trip in the US, you must also have a valid passport.
If you’re under 25, you may need to prove that you’ve been driving for at least two years.
What payment methods do you accept?
Turo accepts most domestic and international credit cards issued by major financial institutions.
Turo accepts most credit cards issued by major financial institutions (including American Express and Discover cards). Turo also accepts debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo that are linked to a checking account. Turo accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay on mobile devices in the US.
We do not accept cash, checks, prepaid cards, reloadable debit cards (like Simple, Chase Liquid, or EDD debit cards), temporary bank cards, or cards that are not linked to a bank account. The payment method you add to your account must be in your name.
If you’re booking a car in a country other than your home country, notify your bank or credit card company about the impending charge from Turo. This will prevent them from declining the charge or blocking your access to your card while they verify that the transaction is valid.
Are my passengers allowed to drive? How do I add a driver?
For trips in the US to be covered by a Turo protection plan your passengers must be an approved Turo driver and are added to the trip via the app or website.
If you’re in a Turo covered trip and your passengers are approved Turo drivers, great! They can assist you with the drive. If not, they’ll have to stay your co-pilot. You must be the driver when picking up and dropping off the car. It's your responsibility to confirm whether your passenger has been approved before letting them drive.
To get another licensed driver officially approved to drive:
Once you’ve booked a trip on Turo, navigate to the trip page in the Turo app or by logging into www.turo.com. The booked trip should be in your “Trips” tab of your Dashboard. Near the bottom of this page, you’ll see a “Drivers” Section; this section should indicate you as the primary driver.
Here you can simply add the email address of your secondary driver. If your secondary driver is already an approved Turo member, they will automatically be approved. If they have not yet created a Turo account, they will receive an email with details on how to get approved to drive.
Your secondary driver must follow the steps in the email we send to them about getting approved.
You’ll receive a notification once your secondary driver is either approved or denied. Your trip details will also indicate your secondary driver’s confirmation status, with the status of “Approval pending,” “Approved,” or “Not approved,” indicating they’re going through the process, have been approved, or have been denied membership, respectively. They will receive email confirmation of their approval status as well.
Please note that the primary driver (that’s you!) must be present at the start and end of the trip, and remains solely financially responsible for the trip should anything happen. You are not permitted to let anyone drive the vehicle during your trip other than someone added as an additional driver with the status “Approved.”
Pickup and Drop Off
Don’t forget to bring your (permanent) driver’s license. You cannot pick up the car without it!
In some cases, we may not be around to meet you in person. It’s totally normal. You can find more information about remote key exchanges here.
Check the car thoroughly. We strongly recommend that you take pictures. You are responsible for returning the car in the same condition as rented.
Use the guided handoff process in the app if you’re unsure what pictures to take and how to upload them to your Trip Photos.
